Reynolds - Octo 8, 2001 - 09:19:43 Colorado Springs [USA] Just picked up a 1 year old Pyrenees from a couple that had to surrender her due to covenants in their new housing area. A "BIG" undertaking to say the least. I have grown up with Collies and Shetland Sheepdogs my whole life so raising this size of a dog is somewhat overwhelming. We have a 10 year old daughter and a 22 month old daughter and the dog gets along with both children wonderfully. I found this website via Yahoo and I love it. I was looking for information on grooming and behavior habits of the breed and the GPCA link was great! Thank you for this invaluable website and I will be sure to bookmark it for future reference. |

Wesley Caddell - Octo 6, 2001 - 08:03:15 Mt. Morris [USA] Love your site! My husband and I didn't know much about Pyreneese until we received ours from a breeder in Texas as a gift. Since then we enjoy reading about other dogs like her. Cleopatra has a little different 'flock' to look after. She was raised with our cat, Jasmine, and Cleo looks after her like she was a flock of sheep! |

Fraser - Octo 4, 2001 - 11:53:22 Legal, Alberta [Canada] I recently purchased a great pyreneese puppy in July 01. His name is Grizzly and he is 4 months old now. My neighbour purchased his brother. We both live on acreages next to each other. We read in a pet book that two males and or two female pyreneese tend to fight when they are adults. We would appreciate any information regarding this. They are beautiful dogs, so smart, loyal and loving. I am so happy to have the opportunity to have one in our family. |

Thank you for your prayers and your wonderful website. Benight - Sep 9, 2001 - 7:34:13 Manitou Springs, CO 80829 [USA] I grew up with Pyrs. We lost our female (13 years old) this last may. Our Male died (he was 11) about 4 years ago now. We got him from a breeder in the Swiss Alps (Les Diableret--spelling). The sire was from a small town in the foothills of the Pyrenees in France. The female was from Colorado, USA. We would love to find another Male from Europe. Unfortunately, I don't think a puppy could make the flight safely. We had lived in Germany at the time we got our male, so he was a year old by the time we came home. He was full of color!!! and his temperment was incredible. Our female was also wonderful, but a bit of a handful. I will always have a Pyr.... Chip Benight |

Butcher - Sep 2, 2001 - 2:28:51 Allen [USA] We've just recently purchased 8.5 acres with some sheep. We also plan to get some ducks and/or swans. It sounds like this type of dog may be perfect for protecting the other animals; however, I'm wondering if they will "scare off" the deer that come up to our property? We certainly don't want that to happen. Will they be protective of our smaller dog, as well (teacup yorkie)? Please reply. Thanks. |

Castleberry - Sep 1, 2001 - 08:20:32 Lakehead, California , 96051 [USA] HI, We bought a papered great pyrenees male. I am sorry to say I don't know what to do with him. We got him when he was about 4 or 5 months old. To make a long story short, the worst thing with him is he is petrified of people. He is 1 year old. If someone comes to the yard he runs to the other side and barks. He also barks at me and my husband when we come home or just for no reason. I started him in the house all last winter and I am at home every day. He is outside now. He has been around a lot of people but won't come near any one, and doesn't like little kids either. I can't have him in the house, because if someone comes over he panics and loses his bowels. I have always trained my own dogs and horses, but have never had this type dog. Maybe I should give him to a rescue. He gets along great with animals. Please let me know if you have heard of this or is this unusual for the breed? Thanks, Pam Castleberry |

09:23:13 Bethany, Okla. [U.S.] Hello! I was just checking out the sites about the Great Pyrenees. I am the proud owner of 8 cats, 3 dogs, 11 ducks and 1 goose! While at the vet hospital Sunday night visiting my Dad's kitty, the animal control person brought in this poor puppy that had been hit by a car. After listening to the conversation, it appeared as though the poor thing was going to have to go back to the animal shelter and be put down! It broke my heart to hear such a thing! I volunteered to accept the cost of the surgery so that the baby could hopefully walk again and would at least have a chance at life. The surgery went well! A portion of a bone in the leg was removed and she should recover just fine. Years ago I owned a wonderful Afghan-Hound, but that is the only LARGE dog that I have had. I was browsing sites just to get information and would welcome any info or comments to help me. I am not certain that I will keep "Lucky" but I am certainly keeping her for as long as it takes to teach her to walk again. I want her to have the best home possible and that might not be at my house with so many other animals around. You know--she has already stolen my heart and I might never be able to let her go anywhere else! What wonderful dogs these Great Pyrenees are!! |

Nigro - Aug 27, 2001 - 11:14:02 Acworth [USA] We were blessed to have our Great Pyrenees/Border Collie mix Nikita for almost 13 years. She was a little ball of white fluff with a badger face when we brought her home at 10 weeks and 20 lbs. It was love at first site for us and love for the breed everlasting. She had the warmest brown eyes with always present black eyeliner. We never could figure out what part of her was Border Collie because her size, majestic appearance and warmheartedness were all Great Pyrenees - through and through. She was the best and she is forever in our hearts. She died this July 6 of sudden and chronic kidney failure. We had her buried in a beautiful and peaceful pet garden and just visited her this past weekend. She was our first baby and it was just the 3 of us for 7 years until the birth of our son. We called ourselves the 3 Muskateers because she came everywhere with us. That is why it is so difficult without her. We know time heals but we long for those big brown soulful eyes gazing at us from her spot on the flakati rug (which she blended right in with!). We can't wait 'til the day she will be running towards us over the Rainbow Bridge - what a glorious reunion. I once read that once you own a Great Pyrenees, no other breed exists. That is so very true. If the day comes where we find we can have another dog, you know it will be another Great Pyrenees, not to replace our Nikita, but rather out of the love we have for her and her breed. |

Newland - Aug 26, 2001 - 0:46:34 Indianapolis [USA] First, I want to say I love this site. Monday, I go to pick up my first pyr pup. He is 8wks old and weighs around 23lbs! My five year old daughter has named him Clifford the Big White Dog. I have been doing a lot of research on the best way to train them. I plan on crate training and taking him to obedience classes as soon as I can. From what I understand socialization is very important with this breed. I also have heard they can be hard to train and are big barkers. Any thoughts on this or training tips?? L |

Caldwell - Aug 26, 2001 - 0:05:56 Sylva [NC] I recently acquired a Great Pyrenees dog for the first time. I am finding her to be a gentle, sweet-natured dog, but very independent. I have had her a year now and still cannot take her out without a leash as I am not sure she will stay with me. But we are working on it. She knows "sit" and "down", but has a hard time with "stay". She definitely loves people, especially children, but can be a bit overzealous with her affection. The nice thing is she tires out quickly after about 15 - 20 minutes of hard playing or running. Then we both need a nap. |

- Aug 21, 2001 - 9:17:43 Tucson,Arizona [USA] Roi-Roi, our Pyr, is the faithful guardian against such desert beasts as the fearsome lizard and the ever-present morning dove. He is the definition of the "mat-dog" literally lying in front of the front door to our "cottage" Patou could not be prouder. Roi is the talk of the neighborhood when little Joe (6 years old) walks Roi while Dad and older sister Cathy hold the reins on our smaller elkhound Trygg. Roi is truely the gentle giant and "the gentleman in the white fur". Pyrs rule, even here in the desert southwest! |

Marshall - Aug 21, 2001 - 4:54:53 Wellandport, Ontario. [Canada] We have had Pyrs for 25 yrs. We currently have a 2 1/2 yr. old neutered male named "Cruiser" who was recently diagnosed with bone cancer (osteo- sarcoma) in his right front leg. After much gathering of info, and MAJOR soul searching, we have decided to go ahead with leg amputation and chemotherapy, as this is the best chance we can give him for any long-term survival. I am looking for any information from anyone who has had experience with a Pyr with this same problem, as I am concerned as to how he will handle the chemotherapy (Carboplatin or cisplatin). The E-mail address I have given is that of a friend, as we are not yet "computer-driven", so please address any replies to "Lynda Marshall, re: Cruiser". Thanks for any help! |

Pollock - Aug 21, 2001 - 08:12:00 Glen Burnie [United States] 3 days ago, we had to have our Great Pyrenees-Buck- put to sleep, because of fluid build up in his lungs and abdomen. His heart was double the size because of a tumor near his heart. Buck was the first member of our family, then came children. He was a very LOVING and LOYAL dog. My husband and I were with him when he was given the needle. We wanted to be the last people he saw, he just looked like he was sleeping. I kept on telling him how much I loved him and we were doing this for him because he was starting to feel pain. I couldn't stand by and start to let him suffer in pain. We all feel as we lost a child or a sibling. He was the best dog and I will always cherish the 10 years and 10 months we had with him. |

- Aug 21, 2001 - 07:58:40 Burlington [USA] We have purchased our first Pyrenees... Stanley. We have 2 other dogs, a golden retriever and a pom, 2 cats 2 ducks and 4 horses. Stanley is only 4 months old and has already given us some wonderful memories. We would like to know how to bond him with the other animals. He likes the golden but chases the ducks and terrorizes the pom. He respects the horses but I think its because they are so much bigger than he is.Any suggestions on bonding would be great |

05:23:02 Benton [USA] Hello, We own an Anatolian Shephard and recently moved back to Maine. We live in a very rural area and feel she is a wonderful guardian for our Nigerian Dwarf Goats. The problem we have is the dreaded 'NEIGHBOR'. When Annie occasionally barks to ward off preditors, the neighbor is on the phone after a minute or 2 of her barking. Annie is a very disciplined dog and has never barked for long lengths of time and minds very well. Is there anyone out there that can give me some advice as to our rights as owners of LGD's? http://www.morningstarfarm.net/ |

Wade - Aug 17, 2001 - 09:15:08 Bradford [England] My pyr is just six months old, he barks, sheds, drools, digs and steals. He's also gentle, friendly, protective, handsome smart and gives lots of big sloppy kisses. Sebastian is my best friend and I couldn't be without him. Gave him a bath the other day, but I think I got wetter than he did. I think Sebastian believes that we humans are slow learners, but I think I am now trained to obey his every whim. |
