My husband and I are the lucky owners of two Great Pyr's. Sophie 3 yrs and Lilly 13 mos. We are very fortunate to be able to take them with us everywhere we go. Even to work everyday. Sophie was a rescue dog. We got her when she was a year old. We fell in love and last Christmas got Lilly. We had a Great Dane prior to Sophie and now love this Breed!!

My daughter and a friend found a Great Pyrenees that had been hit by a car and neglected. They are in the process of getting him fixed up and on the road back to recovery. They love the dog and he is precious. Right now they are trying to find out anything they can about the dog so this site is especially helpful. They are contacting the rescue contact for our area. Thanks for being a source of communication.

I'm a proud owner of a 1 1/2 year old male named "Kosto" which means in French "strong, big, powerful" he is my second great pyrenees my family and I had one for 8 years prior to him unfortunately he died of bone cancer. His name was Kosto as well. What I really appreciate is seeing my 4-year-old son play and run as well as wrestle with our dog. The love and gentleness that the dog gives is so warming, knowing that this calm and friendly animal protects your loved ones. Kosto like most other great pyrenees is hard headed however he is not a pet but a member of the family, and everyone that has friend like Kosto is lucky and knows how important he can be in your every day life. And to every Great Pyrenees owner congrats. And I know at one point your house looked like a disaster area so thumbs up for the effort and attitude. To the webmaster of this site congrats. This site is beautiful and it's nice to see that our great friends are being recognized and appreciated. Pat Villeneuve

We have a two year old female pyr we adore. She has been the most gentle member of our bustling family of young children. At about six months, she and our then two year old did have a struggle over who got the sandbox. Size won out and she became the new owner of a sandbox bed. Our son got over it fairly fast. Well, we've just moved to the hot state of Florida and while we have plenty of sand for her 'beds' and my youngest to play in now, I'm worried about how she will do in the heat and humidity. She's always been too timid to try a wading pool. I'm wondering if her natural coat will also keep her insulated a bit from the heat. If not would I be cruel not to shave her (I would hate to loose her beautiful coat)? Or should I resign myself to an indoor dog during the summer? I suppose this is a typical Pyr dilema. -Margie

We have a 10 mo. old female named Xena and she is my youngest childs best buddie. All though Zena is very loving and tries her best to behave, she doesn't have any idea how BIG she is. At what age is training school appropreate and do you think it breaks their spirit? I'd rather deal with her occasional no no bad girl stuff than ruin her personality.

My kids and I have just gotten a handsome male pyr and he is so fun. He's about 10 weeks old and gives us lots of joy - I get so many remarks about how awesome he is. He's about 25 lbs so far and growing like a weed, but he doesn't seem to eat very much. I have an adult dog and Riley (our pup) seems to like her food better, but I need to keep him on puupy food somehow! Any suggestions? Thanks!

We own five of these wonderful dogs, and use them to guard our sheep and goats. We were told when we moved to Indiana that the best protection against coyotes were Great Pyrenees, so we decided to invest in a pair since our sheep were being decimated by coyotes. We love these gentle giants, and find them to be every bit as great as the name and reputation implied.

We are getting our first Pyr pup in Feb. We are a little worried about getting a pup in the winter since we both work. We have 2.5 acres and some other animals for her to guard when bigger, but what about when she is young? The dog comes from an outdoor guard family and will remain outside. Does this pose any particular training problems? What about companionship? Should we get another Pyr? or another dog? Will it want to eat the cat and chickens?

Owned a male and female Great Pyrenees. Last one died 5 years ago. Was like losing a human. Took this long before we could consider getting another one, and not feeling like we "replaced" ours. Best dogs I have ever owned. Fantastic with kids, super smart, great protectors. The male, Monte, was 170 pounds and sent many people running, when he greeted them at the security-strength screen door in a standing position, looking through the screen at them eye-to-eye.

Sherman, otherwise known as "The Tank" came into our home 6/17/99. Initially I was very skeptical that this was the breed for my husband and I since we are both professionals (read fluffy, white hair on dark business suits) and live in the city (fortunately we own a huge old Victorian). The other breed traits of digging, barking and independent thinking also weighed heavy on my mind. All these thoughts were immediately displayed the moment I looked into his huge, long lashed, soulful eyes. Truely, there are times I think he is a person wearing a dog suit! Sherman came from a litter of 13 pups: his mom and dad are responsable for a herd of goats on a working farm in the rural part of SW PA. He still has a few siblings remaining there, and on more than one occasion when he has misbehaved, we have teasingly reminded him that he could be sleeping in a barn chasing livestock instead of living the luxurious life of a gentile city dog! Usually he just momentarily glances our way, then procedes with his less than stellar behavior. To those of you considering this breed, the best recommendation I can give is that I would do it again in a heartbeat. Sherman enriches our lives beyond what I ever thought possible. He is kind to my nieces and nephew, plays well with all the other dogs in the neighborhood, protective of us and our home without being aggressive, and exhibits a blend of closeness and independentness that works well with our lifestyle. Training has been both an easy and hair pulling experience. GPs are extremely smart, so the basic commands are learned with ease and usually the stationary ones are followed since they want to sit and lie down to begin with. The problems arise with moving commands like "come". Sherman seems to process the command, and will respond to it if HE thinks it's important! We go to school every week, so maybe there will be room for improvement. Good luck to all with a new GP. Take pleanty of pictures since they seem to grow overnight.

My husband and I have a Great Pyrennes dog named Dudley. Dudley turned 3 on September 21st. He is the absolute best dog we have ever had. In fact, his loyalty to us saved our lives on December 8th of last year. Our home caught on fire and Dudley woke us up at 4:00am and all three of us managed to get out alive from a bedroom window, down a ladder, with minutes to spare. Imagine carrying a 130 lb Great Pyrennes dog down a ladder while your house is engulfed in flames. Dudley hurt his hip a little, but he has recovered quite nicely. He is our best friend and the greatest companion any family could have. We are very grateful for him.

I am surfing the net to try and find info about the Great Pyrenees breed. I had never heard of them until about two weeks ago when we decided to to get a dog that is half Great Pyrenees and half Black Lab. Still have not seen the dog. We will pick her up on the 20th of December when she makes six weeks old. The father is Black Lab and the mother is Great Pyrenees. The lady we are getting her from has told us that she is Black, with four white feet and a white chest. We have just purchased a Trail ride ranch in Mossouri with plenty of room for her to move around. If anyone has hade this mixture of Great Pyrenees, please let me know how it worked out.

I am looking to rescue / adopt two Great Pyrenees pups, but have some concerns: one is, we have two adult male cats(seniors), second is hot weather. Living in South Texas offers some challenges due to the summer high temperatures and humidty. Will this breed be comfortable in the high temperatures associated with South Texas? And what can I expect as interaction between this breed and two adult cats? We will keep the dogs inside at night and outside during the day. Can anyone comment on these two issues. Also, again I am looking to adopt / rescue two young Great Pryrenees. Thanks from the opportiunity to place this. edc

Our "Bear" is 7 mths old and we love him very much. However, he's giving us too much trouble. Bear stays outside. We walk and play with him everyday, but he's always not satisfied. He will then bark & cry, which make us very nervous as our neighbour is already complaining about his noise. It seems that he's not independent enough. Besides, he's very destructive. He likes digging & chewing a lot which has completely destroyed the backyard. He has been to training lessons and we've tried our best to control him. We really love him very much & want to keep him. But if this situation continues, we may have to give him away. Could anyone please give me some suggestions? Thanks!

We have a Chow/Pyr mix that looks and acts like what I see and read here. He came from a shelter. He is about 1 yrs old and has been a challenge to get to this age. He is lovable, wonderful, hugable, and has stopped chewing the house down. We would like to get a companion dog for him. I understand a female would be best. He has been neutered so we are not into breeding. He really is a wonderful animal. This time of the year he is a big wooly bear that enjoys being outside in the cool fall/winter air. He is an inside dog and sleeps is our bedroom.

I have had Newfoundlands for about 12 years or so along with a Chocolate Lab & a couple of mixes. Last spring I was given a female Pyr. Shilo was about a year & a half, very hand shy but willing to do anything: except stop barking. She stays in the basement at night so we can sleep. She's very loving but because of illness I haven't been able to train her much. A super-soaker squirt gun helps with the barking some...I don't even have to hit her with the spray...but she always starts barking again eventually. I'd like more but we have 6 including her & my husband likes the Newfies more.

I was in Georgia one day and a woman was walking a very large white dog. I was sitting on a bench and this huge beast of a dog started to come toward me, well it came over and put its head in my lap (it nearly scared me to death), but all it wanted was to be petted. From that day forward i have wanted a Pyrenees. My hopes came true the other night when a friend called and said that she had access to a free puppy (not registered obviously) and she had just payed $350.00 for one 11 week old pup. Anyway, she got me the puppy and now I am the owner of a 6 week old Pyrenees pup named Dreyfus.

I found Mombasa on the side of the road. He was not the friendliest dog ever but I knew he was a pyr. I had been wanting a pyr for about 6 months, talking non-stop about the breed. I wouldn't get one though because I knew I wanted to live out of the country and travel and that did not seem fair or responible. Basa came into my life at the perfect time, he has become my bestest friend. He has had some problems, very bad hip problems and extremely terratorial. I am an herbalist and we (he and I) have managed to improve his hip discomfort greatly, but no amount of training seems to make much difference in his aggression. It has been recommended to me by a pyr rescue person that Basa be put to sleep. NOT an option. So now I am nearing the time to leave the country and I have not figured out what to do with Basa. The vets have told me he is between 2 and 3 years old. I am leaving the country for @ six months, I want this dog for the rest of his life. My family loves him but are older and do not feel up to the challenge, (He will bite people). So we get a phone call out of the blue from a pyr women who rehabilitates pyrs who has heard we rescued a very agessive pyr. Turns out I found him 30 miles from home, he is a working dog, the best the man has ever had, he grew up chained in someones basesment and was rescued and trained as a working dog and this man adopted him. The final test came when the man came over to see him. When Basa calmed down he knew and liked the old owner (Basa attacks everyone that comes in the house with no discretion except family). It turns out he is 7 years old and although I am dissappointed that there are not so many more years to spend together the man does want his dog back because he is the best guard dog he has ever had (and he is a very nice man.) I have had basa for 7 months and I am very very attached to him. Basa's other owner has been kind enough to let me keep Basa until I leave. There are miracles.

In fact I want more... so any info would be greatly appreciated. I hope all of you are blessed with the kind of relationship Sam and I have. (Although we still argue about his barking from time to time) Wouldn't trade him for the world. Take care, Jes

My my my my my!!! What lovely pics!!! I have a rescue dog that is just as lovely as any lady in the pics. I am glad to discover that these dogs are appreciated throughout the world. Mine was a stray picked up by the pound, hand shy, car shy, doorway shy: they said she was probably abused by a big tall man. Stands to reason...she is still afraid of big guys to this day, especially if they're wearing a hat. I got her when she was 1 yr. 6 mos. old. She was a challenge the first three months, but now, she is the best, most well behaved dog, most wonderful companion, and, of course, greatest watch dog in the world. I am constantly thrilled and amazed at her instinctual ability to protect other species that she bonds with, which includes at one time or another over the last two years, Lady-bird, the Love Bird (who perched on top of her head), Yogi & Boo-boo, the twin tabby cats, Scooter-Trooper, the gorgeous cat sister, and mama cat, Miso (who at four weeks old to nursed on Mariah's neck). They are all hers!! The first three months I had my dear Mariah-Petunia-Jane were very challenging, however. I knew nothing about dogs, much less 100 pound ones. I had just bought a new "old" house, and couldn't wait to have a dog, so I adopted her the week after I closed. During that first three months, she totally destroyed my bedroom, first the bed, then the box springs, then the lovely old wooden window sills. I went to a trainer and discovered I was doing everything wrong. So...I started training her with a vengence, determined to correct my bad start. Only problem -- it was in the summer, so the training sessions were just a quick study, due to summer vacation. The trainer said give her a crate (too expensive for my budget after just closing on the house) or give her the bedroom, and...for god's sake, open the blinds for the poor thing when you have to leave her inside while you go to work!! Boy, was I dumb! I did what the trainer said and...gave her the bedroom. My bedroom became the loft (very rustic!) and the destroyed box springs and bed went in the garage. Mariah got the red-oak hard-wood floor bedroom to herself. And guess what, Mariah and I adjusted to each other! (did I fail to mention the torn ligament in my knee and my broken elbow during that first three months?) I learned after two separate trips to the emergency room that it works better to negotiate with Mariah than to try to force her into unfamiliar situations. And now...here we are, two and a half years later. She just is about the greatest thing that's ever happened to me!! (I forgot to mention I have a head-injured son who Mariah took to immediately, and they are great buds) So...here's my delimma...I have this gorgeous dog...and I mean she is really beautiful!! (She'll put any of the pics I've seen on the internet to shame). She's also quite healthy, vet says good hips and all that stuff. But...she's a rescue, I mean no papers or anything. So, I doubt I could show her (anyway, I don't know much about "showing"). I love her dearly, but I know she would be happier in a cooler part of the country. What should I do? We have found her a home up in the Colorado Rocky Mountains with chickens and goats and pigs, where it is obvious she would live out her days more comfortably and happily than she could here.

Trying to locate the article about a rescue run for Rocky and Caitlen, who came from Calcasieu Parish Animal Shelter in Lake Charles, LA , sent to Florida Rescue with Joan Fremo, and Rocky was adopted to someone in Pennslyvania. I fell in love with Rocky at the shelter and would not let him be put down, I would love to know how he is doing. Please , can someone sent the article to my email as an attachment, I only have expanded email, no internet. Much appreciated. Rocky was a real cool dog, great personality, do anything type of dog. thanks. Anita

We bought her in May,the day my Grandpaw died. She is pretty hyper right now because she is in a kennel, but we are fixing to put her on half an acre.Do you know if she will know what to do with the goats when she is with them? If you have any information on them, could you please send me some. Thank you.

I just lost my beloved Pyr. She would have been 16 on Christmas. I miss her something fierce. My boys are 16 and 17. They don't remember a time when she wasn't around. She had to sweetest disposition but she loved to get loose and explore for a couple of hours before she came home. I used to raise and show Pyrs before I started raising and showing kids. There is a hole in my life but I don't think I'm up to taking a puppy right now.

I have a 2 year old male named Mongo, he is beautiful, but a handful when it comes to attcking my cats. He ignores our goats, female St. Bernard, and female Giant SChnauzer. But he LOVES the kids, there isn't a mean bone in his body, that is unless you are a CAT...

Our Puppy, Buddy, is 7 months old and he is fantastic. My daughter and I have fallen in love with this ball of fur and he has also fallen in love with us. He is very stubborn and has selective hearing but that just adds to his charm. I guess my best time of the day is when we all sit on the floor and cuddle with the puppy and he breaks your heart when he cries when you stop petting him. I enjoyed your website and will visit again soon.

Hello, I love the breed and finally got a pup last year. Since then I have had wrestle matches with my Pyr. I would appreciate any advice on how to calm them down (the one's I had seen before I got her were calm). Or do they calm down when they are older. She's just so big that when she plays with me she hurts me. I still think they are beautiful and majestic. This is a really great site and keep up the good work. P.S. She is a sweety when she wears out and all the hair stops flying.

I am trying to find out as much as possible about the breed. Some mean person has abandoned her. I did find out through her rabies tag that her name is Zoe. She is absolutely beautiful and my children love her. Very gentle, very smart. Any advice as to how to love her and care for her would be a great help. Also any tips on bathing her would be nice. Our first bath was laughable, I had to pick her up to get her in the tub and she is BIG. thanks

pyrs are one of the greatest dogs on earth. One helpful hint with them though, is do not try to separate two pyrs that are fighting by yourself. it can be very dangerous. Our three year old female is very special to us and I would jump in front of a car for her, so she would not be injured. They are great animals, beautiful, majestic, proud, fun, and loving.
