I love dogs. I want to get a dog, and a friend offered to give me a 1/2 great pyrenees and 1/2 newfoundland mix puppy. So, I am exploring as to what kind of dog it would be, and how much is expected of me to take care of him correctly. This is a nice site. Thanks

We were given a beautiful female only 5 months old now. She was abandoned and kept only in a basement chained up. Now she lives on a farmette with six acres and she is by far the best dog I have ever owned. Her name is Athena and my youngest daughter calls her "Sugar" She is so wonderful with people and loves to ride in the car...Soon I figure as she gets bigger...she will probably take over the driving.

Sarah, our G.P. has been a VITAL part of our family for 2 years now. She has become much more than just a family pet. She is our protector, our children's (and our) playment, and a friend...she even shares the bed with us (if we are lucky enough to get there first). We have never before seen a dog that is this wonderful with children, we don't know what we would do without her.

I adopted my great pyreneese from the humane society. Although it took about a year for him to get over his broken heart, all the patience were so worth it.

I just thought I'd sign in a comment on our good friend, Nikko. My wife, Julie, introduced me to the breed after she had been the proud owner of an Alaskan Mal, and I had raised 5 Irish Setters. Our powerful Nikko is the friend of our 2 cats, one a Persian, and the other a Himmy.

Am looking for a Great Pyrenees female pup next spring. Would prefer one from parents who work a farm. We have horses and will have sheep and goats in the spring. Would also like to consider leasing an adult to help train the pup and protect the place for the first year. Does anyone ever do that?

We got our first Pyrenees almost 7 years ago to guard against Coyotes. We now have 3. I've owned a lot of different breeds of dogs over the years, but Pyrs are the best! They've looked after horses, goats, chickens, and of course children. I hope I'm never without one.

We have a two year old Great Pyr named Suzette. She is our first Pyr, and we would not dream of having any other breed of dog in the future. She is by far the most intelligent and best behaved animal we ever had. She is left pawed, unique, and uses her paws to play with toys (including our Siamese cat) which I have never seen in other dogs. She is sweet and even temtered, but she is also fiercely protective of her home and her people. She is very big, weighing about 140 pounds at the present time, but she is also graceful and very self-possessed. We love her, and we are also interested in rescuing another Pyr if possible. Any information on this in our area would be greatly appreciated. I can recommend this breed to anyone who wants a really great companion and a true family member. They are the best!

I have been involved with the Great Pyrenees for about 10 years now. That is when my mother got her first Pyr. Since than she has adopted 2 more and purchased a pup in April for showing. I have been handling for a few breeders in the Great Pyr Club of Central Ontario for 2 years now. I am a Pyr owner now (Since Jul 98) and I love our 4 year old male Stormy. This breed is like no other in my opinion. I love Stormy and have future plans for many more Pyrs in our home and family. (I have introduced the breed to 2 families in our area. They both now have Pyrs of their own.)

2 Years ago we were looking for a pet. We decided we would rescue a dog. My husbans found an ad in the Sunday Paper referring to small white polar bears. When we wwnt to see these gentle giants we fell instantly in love. Our only regret is that we did not recue both of the pyrs. Our dear Miss Jewel is the sweetest most loving dog we have ever had. We will have no other type of dog.

I want to send you a picture of my dog due to the animal shelter (North Shore Animal Leaque) says he is a Husky/Yellow Lab . When you see him I think he is a Great Pyrenees, Akbash or Maremma... possibly mixed, hard to tell. He is all white and shows gold on his coat when wet.

Robbie Tucker - Nov 12 1999 - 22.29

Yesterday, as I was caring for my 87 year old mother who lives with my husband and I, I looked out the french doors to the deck and there stood a polar bear. Actually I live in Virginia Beach, VA so that was my first clue that the magnificent creature staring back at me was not a polar bear. I opened the door and the "bear" waltzed in. He greeted each of our three cats and then majestically walked up to my mother. Because she was sitting down, they met each other eye to eye. She reached out to pet his head and that creature laid his head in her lap. This is my second encounter with a great pyrenees, my first encounter was as the proud owner of a large male, when I lived in Idaho. His name was Mongo and Mongo died of old age in my arms. The end of this story is that the "bear" had a name tag. His name is "Louie the Magnificent" and his tag placed him in Alexandria, VA. I called the number and Louie and his mistress were reunited. Seems the mistresses' mother had brought Louie for a trip from Alexandria to see her college freshman daughter and Louie missed the young woman too. In the brief chat I had with the Mother, daughter and Louie, I discovered that Louie was a rescued dog. I had no idea that such a connection existed. I am very interested in giving a home to a rescued pyrenees and I didn't think about the option until after I left the threesome. Can you please put me in touch with the agency you adopted your dog from, and maybe they can get closer to my home? Thank you so much for any help you may be able to offer. Great page! I have an 11 week old half Great Pyreneese-Bull Mastiff. His mother is a white great pyreneese, and so far he shows more pyreneese charecteristics than mastiff. He is so loveable and wonderful(and stubborn!). It is nice to be able to find information and somehow connect with other pyreneese fans. Thank you for making that possible. Heather and Griffin

We adopted a rescued Pyr in August and named him Basa. He is two years old and a complete love. We have a large yard with no fence so he can't be outside by himself until we move next year. He doesn't seem to mind spending most of his time indoors - anywhere his people are is where he wants to be. He is sweet and loving and has a great sense of humor. He likes to play games and we have fun trying to figure out what the "rules" of the game are. I don't know how we got along without him.

Cody and Dillon accompanied their Dad on a 100,000 mile, two year Odyssey which took us to 35 states, including Alaska, the Yukon, The Klondike, The Arctic Ocean, Canada, Yosemite, Mt. McKinley, The Rockies, and more places than Dad can now name. The " Tres Hombres ", or three men, hiked, climbed, drove, swam, and walked all over Noth America. All ended the tour in Great physical, mental, and emotional condition. And what a time we had. Dad wrote along the way and accumulated over 100,000 words in his journal. I am so spoiled......and so are they! (813) 251-6431 TallTraveler@aol.com

I have a 1 year old GP male. My wife and me were searching an excellent dog for my son who´s 3 years old, he was living in hospitals the first two years of his life but thank god he´s fine now and the endless love of us. The doctors told us that a pet could help him a lot. We went to several exhibitions of dogs and we finally saw a GP stand. We decided for a GP because of their great love and care for the children instead of his size. We bought "Sis" when he was 1 month old, he´s a healthy dog, he loves and cares all the time for our son Oscar and so him for his dog. My wife and me are very happy and for sure that´s the best choice we could ever made.

Janie is a 3 year old G.P. that I rescued. I was unsure before I saw her, but once I looked past her pitiful body and into her intelligent and kind eyes, she was mine! She was in poor shape and it took several trips to the vet to get her well. Now she is healthy and happy and a wonderful guardian of our livestock and a great friend. We love her dearly.

We are the proud owners of an 8 month old female Pyr named "Winter". She has been a source of joy to our family. She's been wonderful with my two boys and has a special fondness for my 10 yr old son who has autism and a seizure disorder. He cries and she's there to comfort him! My 7 yr old loves that she comes to sit on his bed at bedtime - she's got to check everyone out! She also gets along well with our 6 yr old Golden Retriever "Brandy".

Billings, male, almost 3yrs, 115-120 is one of the best dogs in the world. He is a gentle, sophisticated giant who plays with cats, dogs and children, but will even fight an overly agreesive animal. If all Pyrs are like or better than him (I have difficulty imagining how) then this must surely be the best dog breed in the world. In my 53 years of life I have had Beagles, hounds, Irish setters, Golden Retreivers, German Shepards, and others. I have also been exposed to many other good dogs including K9 corps animals.

Shelby is our second Pyr! Our beloved Bear lived to be 12 yrs. and we were able to enjoy both of them for six months. The adage that "once you own a Pyr, you'll never own anything else" is true. Shelby is a dear and sinee you don't see a lot of Pyr's in Florida, sometimes she is a novelity!

We are the proud "Parents" of Molly B. Good, a two and a half year old,102lb. Great Pyrenees. She is gentle, loving and affectionate. Her best friend is Michael, our 18 month old tabby cat. Molly puts up with a lot of kitty antics with total understanding. We feel Molly has a special mission in life. She survived Parvo at six weeks. She came into our lives by accident. We really were not looking for such a big dog. However, we never regreted for a moment bringing her home.My true desire is for Molly to become a Therapy dog. So we are working toward that. A real people dog, she likes nothing better than to be petted and fussed over. She's brought joy and happiness.

we got our pyr fromthe humane society as he was found abandon on the side of the road, very abused. Still "Duncan" is so lovable that you would never know he was treated poorly. He gets along with our great Dane, german springer, and two cats. He' about a year old and 133 pounds. I am concerned about him staying out in the cold. I know the breed is outdoors because of their background, but does anyone know how cold is too cold. Up here in the mountains, it can get down to 10 below. Right now it's in the teens at night and he seems perfectly content. We did buy him a dogloo but he won't use it and lasts in the house only to be social and then wants outdoors. I thought great danes were lovable but this guy is so sweet it's hard to imagine them ever being aggressive.

Today I was in the mood to go visit the animals at the humane socity.(I love to visit with the dogs and give them some attention. It kind of goes both ways!) Then I saw him, a beautiful full blooded Great Pyrameese. My heart melted, and if I do say so myself so did his! I took him out of the kennel and into a room, His gentleness embraced me with a HUG, literaly he jumped up very gental and gave me a hug. Needless to say he's home with me laying two feet away from me this very moment. I sense his loyality, love and tenderness. What a beautiful animal God has made!

Just wanted to say this a really nice web site! Our first Pyr, or rather 1/2 Pyr is a wonderful 5 year old male. He is 1/2 Pyr and 1/2 German Shepherd. Because of Hercules we now own a sweet, beautiful female 1 year old purebred Pyr. Shiloh was surrendered and put into rescue. Our story about how we got her is just too long to put in here. She is such a delight to have in our family! Even when she chews on the wrong object we can't stay mad at her for long because she gives us those big beautiful looks with her big beautiful face! The funny stories we could tell about her are numerous in the few short months that we've had her. She gets along great with Hercules and the cats. She loves children and anyone that comes to our house. All I can say is that we will always have at least one Pyr:)

After sharing our life with our pyr, "Krystal", life just wouldn't be the same. She is a family member that accepts the good and the bad in a person and does her best to turn a frown to a smile. Just had pups at our grandfather's house and Krystal will soon have a baby brother to play with named Justice. Once you hace a pyr in your life you can't have just one, two are double the love you receive from them.

My husband and I are thinking about getting a dog in the near future and are doing research on our favorites. I like the way the Pyrenees look and I like that they are good with children as we plan on starting a family in the next year or two. We were intereted to know if there were any Pyrenees breeders in the Rochester, NY vicinity? If you know of any, please let us know. Thanks!

We used to have a pyrenees named "Sprucey Pussycat" She was an awesome dog but we had to put her down because of knee problems and we would like to get a new one but one that has a good breeding line,as it was devastating to put down a perfectly healthy dog because she couldn't bear her wieght on her legs. She was only 5 and I cried for days . Plus our Newfoundlander "Lucy" really misses her they were so close. If you know of any breeders in Canada please contact me. One funny story I have is that "Sprucey" lived in our basement on a single bed during the evenings and one night she got through the upstairs door and knocked the lid off to my dish full of those white mints and was lapping them up like nothing . Well the mints were floating in dog slobber and she was drooling worse than Beethoven(hahaha) she turned and looked at me and shook her head and slobber went everywhere it was also dripping down my brass tables. I miss more than words can say . She brought humor and light into our whole family. She would also never travel in a vehicle but when I brought my first born son Austin home from the hospital and she heard him crying she jumped up in that truck like she always rode in it and before we couldn't even lift her in she hated it so much. Well I should go thanks for the awesome web page I am impressed.

Can someone help? We just lost our 16 year old Pyr to cancer and my 76 year old husband and I are heartsick. I cannot find a breeder in Fla. We have 4 acres, and John rode his 4-wheeler daily to exercise Thor. Doesn't have to be a breeder or show quality pup--just loveable, Is there a rescue group? Please respond

patty is our 4 mos old pyr. she is the sweetest giant pup we've ever had. although she seems very timid now, i am confident that this may have something to do with her nature as a great pyr--independant, and aloof. also, she does not like to be inside. do you have any advice or training insights?

Several months ago we had to put our 15 yr old golden to sleep. 2 months later I saw this little ball of fluff in a pet store and brought back my husband and daughter. We walked out of there with our 10 week old Cudabear. He is now 8 months old and the most loveable dog ever. Sorry we didn't know about this breed sooner.

We got a Great Pyrenees in January. We are her second family. She is 4 years old. The family she had before said it is natural for her to be in a resting position(sleeping position)with her front paws tucked under her body. Do all Great Pyrenees do this? A shep/huskie mix we had before did this and she had a lot of stomach problems.

Auch wir haben einen dieser wundervollen und gutmütigen Hunde bei uns zu Hause aufgenommen. Etwas besseres hätte uns nicht passieren können. Dank dem Herrgott als er diese Rasse erschuf.

We have a 18 month old Pyr named Inga and she is wonderful. She is my 2 year old sons best friend. This has to be the gentlest dog around a small child I have ever seen. I stumbled upon this breed by accident and have been thankful ever since.

I have a 2 year old named Yukon. He is a wonderful, gentle, good natured, huge friend. Our only complaint is that he likes to run away every chance he gets and visit the neighbors. He even runs away when we're playing with him. Other than that he is wonderful. If anyone has any advice, please send. Thanks!

My husband and I have two of these Polar Bears in our lives. Oberon is 7yrs. and has a new baby brother Taliesin 7 months old. I was kind of leary about having two boys, but they seem to have squared things away between themselves as to who is boss, it's certainly not any human that lives here!!!!!

When I was a little girl, I had a Pyrenees with the name Noela. She was very beautiful and obedient. She used to go sit in the tub and hollor if she thought it time for a bath! And she never slept on the ground, always on one of the garden chairs! When she was 8 months old, a car ran her down before our house - it was a tragic day in our whole family. But since then,I've always had a soft spot for the Great Pyrenees.

We have a 6 month old Pyr named Sophie. For 27 years we had Newfs. Belle, our last Newf died of natural causes at the age of 15. I really missed her. But a few months ago we got Sophie and are delighted with her. She walks 2 and a half miles with me everyday. I am slowly learning about Pyrs and their habits. Would love to receive any info on them.
