Jun 26, 2000 - 00:54:57 oak grove, ky [usa] hi, my husband and i just rescued at great pyrenees. His name is Maxium and he was orginally from IL. He now lives with us in KY. He is our eighth edition to the family. We now have 3 dogs, 3 cats, and 2 birds. When he was found he was living in horrible conditons. No food no water. We have only had him two days and the vet says he is 40 pounds under weight, we treated him for whipworms and we are going to have to treat him for heartworms also. Thank you to everyone who believes that animals are part of the family and give them the care and love they need. Sincerly, Tracy Richard |

- 1:59:44 Charlotte [USA] We adopted Sadie at Petsmart in October. We had originally gone there to adopt a kitten however when we got to the adoption area we saw this gigantic white dog with the saddest eyes standing there. She was 2 yrs old and they said she had been through 2 homes. One was a divorce situation and the other was moving and couldn't take her. I had never seen a pyr in my life. Sadie is the most beautiful dog in the world to us and we couldn't love her more. We are Pyr owners forever. We came home that day with a huge dog and a kitten. They are best friends! |

jansen - Jun 24, 2000 - 11:28:19 sydney [australia] gday, Our pyr is named cosmo after kramer on seinfeld, he keeps falling over his own feet, he is 4 years old and he is our second great pyr. Cosmo has two mates, a lhasa apsos called casie who is 11 years of age and a anatolian karabash named stella who is 6 months, cosmo and stella adore each other. We purchased the anatolian so that cosmo would have a dog to play with, and one his own size. We lost our first pyr called roscoe at 6 years through bloat ! beware**** really watch this because when it happens they can die very quickly Kind regards. |

Jun 21, 2000 - 8:10:05 Chicago area [United States] I recently lost my pyr to cancer... he was a part of our family for 4 1/2 short years. He joined us because he had been abused the first two years of his life, he was a rescue from the abusive situation, the person who got him felt he would have a good life with us... and i believe he did. He couldn't have been loved more than he was. He won our hearts within the first few minutes of joining my family. He will be greatly missed, and because of him, I will gladly take in any other rescue dog to give them a chance at a happy life. |

Casey - Jun 21, 2000 - 2:09:24 Waxahachie, Texas [USA] I lost my Pyr last year. Have not yet had the heart to replace her. But I love these dogs. They make my heart soar with appreciation. - Jun 21, 2000 - 0:41:00 Oak Ridge [USA] Just became Mama to little girl Pyr. She is now 11 weeks old, her name is sweet Annie, she is the light of our life. So fun and sweet, but a handful of energy too. I am learning and hope to continue to learn more about this wonderful breed of dog. |

Davidson - Jun 21, 2000 - 00:52:08 Plattsmouth [USA] We have had 3 pryenees. We now have 1. I should restate that. At one time we had 14. Our female went to the Vet and came home with 12 little ones. I told the Vet there must be a mistake, I sent one and came home with 13. They where a bundle in more than one way. We sold all but one. My kids wanted to keep them all. Could you imagine 14 Great Pyrenees in one house. We do miss them. We no longer have the father or mother. We have a 3 year old male. He is named "Naughgan". We are sad to say we have to find him a different family. It is hard to find a dog his size someone. They all love him, but he is a little big. If they really got to know him they love him to. His only down point is he talks back. If any one is interested let me know. |

Wells - Jun 20, 2000 - 2:34:07 Deltona [US] We just added a 8 week old Great Pyrs male pup to our family last week. He's name is Meko & he is an absolute joy ! Housebreaking him is so easy We are amazed how quicky he learns. Do all Pyrs learn behaviors so quickly ? Meko is our family's 1st dog & we are delighted with the breed. We might even go back to get his brother who is the last of this particular litter. |

Vostretsova - Jun 20, 2000 - 07:19:25 Richmond [Canada] Our daughters will get a junior "brother" - tomorrow we are going to bring the puppy to our home. My husband cancelled two days work in the hospital to build ASAP the fence in our backyard. I can't sleep, because I need to give the breeder 3 names to choose from for tomorrow. Not puppy yet in the house, but for two days already, everybody, uncluding grandparents work hard in preparation for the new family member. Wish us luck and good health to our puppy! All the best to everybody and their Great Pyrenees. |

- Jun 17, 2000 - 02:31:47 Port St Lucie, Fla [USA] We have three Great Pyrs, a 10 year old male and two 13 week old male pups. They get along great together. The puppies, Bear and Badger are keeping Jacques (our 10 year old) young. He was sort of mopey before the pups came to live with us, now it's a different story, they romp and play together all the time. They are truly a wonderful breed, I always refer to them as gentle giants. They are great with kids and if you don't mind shedding and drool, I would recommend the breed to everyone! |

Jun 16, 2000 - 03:39:51 Toronto [Canada] Our Pyr, Giant Rumblebuffin (named after the character in the C.S. Lewis book the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - Rumble for short)is almost 9 now. Despite having gone surgery (twice) for a disclocating knee when she was 1 she's still doing great. She was about 1 when we had our first son. She was very curious about what he was and what to do about him. Two year's later when we brought our second son home she looked at him, and then looked at us as if to say "oh no, another one". She's been very good with them. She'd actually walk better on a leash when they were holding the other end than with us. She just seemed to know. Great breed, enjoyed others comments and nice site. Thanks |

Meyer - Jun 15, 2000 - 4:55:08 Florence, Texas [USA] On Saturday, I will bring home two Pyr pups (13wks old) from a rescue shelter. I have loved this breed of dog for years now, since the first time I was walking on a nature trail in Iowa and one lumbered up to me and looked at me with those big brown eyes, they melted my heart. I came across these two abandoned puppies quite by accident at an animal rescue center (Blue Dog Rescue). At the time I came across them, I was just put in a position to give them a proper home... (30 acres to roam!!) I am so excited to give my 3 children the oppurtunity to love these dogs, and be loved and protected by these dogs. The only thing that I worry about is the heat in Texas... will they be cool enough in the shade and in the barn? Anything I could find out would be helpful, thank you so much! Billi Jo Meyer |

Gunn - Jun 14, 2000 - 00:43:42 My family has owned 5 Great Pyrenees dogs. 2 of them died in the spring of 1999. Our first one ever's name was Pyr and he had a great personality and when you needed a hug, he was always right there ready to lay his huge head on your shoulder. it was because of his great personality and his ability to guard the sheep that we have gotten 4 more since him. they are all unique, yet if you need a hug every single one is right there. we missed Pyr and Piper when they died, but we will continue to love them and all of our other puppies for ever and ever because they are a super breed of dog and all dogs are great!!! |

Sr. - Jun 13, 2000 - 01:12:30 Lake Charles,La. [USA] I have a 4 1/2 month old Pyr/St.Benard mix. She is quite a hand full. She has the markings of the Pyr but kinda favors the Saint. Just had her rabies shots today and she weighs 49lbs. Curious to see just how big she'll get. Her name is Lexii. My 2 small children love her to death and she's not as rough as I thought she'd be. Would like to post some of her photo's on this site. She has the double dew claws just like her mother. Training her to potty outside, but she's pretty hard headed, but we're getting there. Shahbazian - Jun 12, 2000 - 4:42:33 [USA]I just wanted to say that we lost our 15yr old dog and were so lost. We went looking for someone to fill the void in our lives and to be a companion to our 5yr old St Bernard/Akita mix. We found this Great Pyrenees/Lab mix and fell in love with her. I started looking at the great Pyrenees on the internet and never knew how wonderful the breed is. Nina has so many of the carateristics of the breed and is a wonderful worm and intelligent dog even at 12 weeks she shows so many noble traits. It is a wonderful and noble breed that i will always have a fancy for. A pure breed is surely in our future. |

- May 30, 2000 - 11:04:50 Brule, Alberta [Canada] Interesting site...I have had 3 pyr's. Currently have a large male. I do alot of outdoor stuff with him. I live in the rockies. I just completed a 1 month Artic expedition with my pyr pulling 150#. Last year I skied across Baffin Island for a month 500klm with brazeau pulling about 150#. He slept out on the barren ground in -38c My dog packs, pulls and fights grizzly bears if he has too. The other 2 I had have both died. My first male died climbing a mountain at age 10. My female died last month. She did a solo 500 klm expedition with me the central artic 4 years ago and kept a barren ground grizzly at bay. Tough dogs and incredibly powerful. I have numerous slides of them in the mountains and artic. I will stay connected now that I have found this site. Thanks Garry Last |

The she caught on to what our other dog does to get out and she started to bring us the doll. Another thing she does every morning is she rushes up the stairs when I let her out of her pen and waits behind our concret rail for our other dog to come up the stairs then she jumps out and grabbs him. She also plays catch with her self. Thanks for reading about Darby Love, Tracy Reneau |

Harris - May 28, 2000 - 03:35:51 Wolverton [USA] I have a two year old male great pyrenees and I love him. He is my protector, my pot full of cheer, and more. I have a sled team of Huskies and have had malamutes, but when it comes to protection, loyalty, bonding, character, and more, its with the pyr. He is in the house with me, and nothing outside gets past him. First line of defense is the huskies outside, and they relay to the pyr in the house what is going on. Then he lets me know. Nobody gets past the mail box here. Great with my 8 and 9 year old, great with cats, great with my other dogs. We do use caution with other male dogs. We were warned before by the previous owner, but have not had any problems. Would love to have a female, not for breeding, but for his companionship. So sweet and gentle he is. |

durbin - May 27, 2000 - 00:33:29 dellwood [us] Just brought home a "little" (ha!ha!)pyr puppy 7 weeks ago....we love her!!! She has gone from 5lbs to 18 lbs in that time period. She does love to eat and sleep. My daughter talked into getting her; before I had St. Bernard's, I have to admit Dakota is winning me over big time. We are not sure she is a purebred since "mom' evidnetly also had a fling with the next door boy, a St. Bernard, but she sure looks like one from what I can tell from photos of the breed and the list of standards. All I know is that she is full of love! |

CA and I have a couple of questions I'd love to get info about--What about a fenced yard? We live in the woods and have no fences and it would be really difficult to build one. How much will pyrs wander? We would keep him kenneled at night. Also, let's talk drooling and shedding, shall we? I've heard that some drool alot, some very little. I know they blow their coat once (or twice?) a year, but in between, how sheddy will they be? I hope to convince my husband that a pyr will be a wonderful addition to our family. He's coming around slowly...wish me luck and any info you can provide would be terrific. Thanks! |

May 25, 2000 - 10:46:55 Johannesburg [South Africa] Hi All We have had pyrenean MD's since I can remember. We are currently on our 4'th. The previous 3 have all been very placid, calm dogs. This new one is a hooligan. She is 10 months old and continues to knock everyone who talks to her over. Yesterday my mother was playing with her and she knocked her flat on her back, hurting her quite badly. We have not done anything different with this dog, she is going to training, although is not at all interested in doing anything there, she does do the things at home though. Please has anyone got any advice on how to calm down this dog, I am 3 months pregnant and won't even go near her for fear of being knocked over. She is my mother's dog. PLEASE HELP |

Woodward - May 24, 2000 - 6:08:41 Franklin, NH [USA] We have just lost the most wonderful great pyr. He was our best friend, and we miss him terribly. At 19 mos. old he was diagnosed with bone cancer of the most agressive type. I held him in my arms and told him how much we loved him as the vet had to put our beloved Harley to sleep. We could not bear to see him suffer. We learned the hard way that you do NOT buy a purebred great pyrenees from a pet store. I have since heard about the nightmares people have had when purchasing these purebreds from pet stores who get them from puppy mills. Harley was the most beautiful dog I have ever had. He had grey badger markings and the deepest dark eyes. I still cry each night as I go to sleep without my beloved Harley. He always laid at my side and now he is gone. We shall never be able to replace him, but we do so realize the beauty and the unconditional love and companionship he gave us. We would like to get another but cannot afford, at present, to purchase from a breeder so if anyone out there knows of either a rescue shelter or anyone who needs to find a home for their Great Pyrenees, please contact me immediately at my e-mail address: lindaw@fcgnetworks.net. We have a lovely home to share with our new companion and plenty of room for him or her to run. Have 3.2 acres with underground fencing that we had installed for our Harley. After owning dogs all my life, I can truly say there is no more beautiful, gentle, loving, protective breed than the Great Pyrenees. I shall never own anything but, again. They are the most amazing gentle giants and so intelligent as well. Let me know if you can help us find another of these wonderful breeds. Thank you so much. |

F. OAKLEY - May 24, 2000 - 01:57:39 CUMBERLAND, RHODE ISLAND [UNITED STATES] I HAVE RECENTLY PURCHASED A GREAT PRY. FOR MYSELF AND MY FOUR YEAR OLD SON. I WAS BLESSED WHEN I WAS A CHILD TO HAVE ONE AS A LOVING FAMILY MEMBER. I NOW HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GIVE MY SON THAT WONDERFUL GIFT AS WELL. ONE THING THAT ALWAYS MAKES ME LAUGH IS WHEN PEOPLE ASK WHAT KIND OF DOG OUR LILY IS AND I SAY A GREAT PYR. PEOPLE SAY "DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GETTING INTO?" I WOULD NEVER OWN ANY OTHER BREED ON THE FACE OF THIS EARTH, AND EVEN THOUGH SHE IS ONLY FOUR MONTHS OLD I TRUST OUR LILY WITH MY SON'S LIFE AS WELL AS MY OWN. HER KEEN INTELLIGENCE AND HER PLAYFUL NATURE ARE BALANCED BY A STRONG INDEPENDENCE AND LOYALTY TO MY FAMILY. SHE HAS ALREADY DEMONSTRATED HER PROTECTIVE NATURE WHEN THERE WERE SOME COYOTES IN THE WOODS NEAR BY. GREAT PYR. ARE THE BEST AND MOST BEAUTIFUL DOG BREED IN THE WORLD AND I TELL EVERYONE THAT THEY ARE WORTH THE TIME AND EFFORT OF OWNING ONE!!!!! |

Julie Miller - May 21, 2000 - 3:16:27 Jefferson City, MO [USA] We've just adopted a five-year-old female Pyr. We're calling her Matisse (Mattie for short). She was a working dog on an area farm who got lost in the pecking order with three other Pyrs and was starting to stray. Now she's learning to adjust to life in town. Love's meeting new people on long walks. Great additon to the family. |

Cullison - May 21, 2000 - 2:40:47 Bloomfield, IN [USA] Our family is adopting our first Pyr this month. She will be only 5 to 6 weeks old, the mother dog died during the birth of a large number of puppies. Six of the puppies have survived. Now that the pups are getting bigger the surrogate mother has her hands full trying to keep them fed. Since they are doing so well, she's letting them go to their new homes. Does anyone have any special suggestions to help one this young? We have raised a Newfoundland years ago so we are familiar with the larger breed dogs. r |

crittenden - May 19, 2000 - 5:26:25 texarkana, tx [usa] Two weeks ago I found a very malnutritioned full-grown "stray" that came to my home. I have been taking care her and she is the sweetest dog. I took her to the vet yesterday and found that she is pure bred great pyrenees and very healthy despite being so skinny now. I had no idea she was a pure bred, but i heard many wonderful things of this breed. I beleive she has been mistreated and is very skiddish. She gets along well with my other dogs (an Australian Shepherd, a Shar-Pei, and a Yorkie puppy), but cowers when people raise their voices or make sudden movements. Can anyone give me some pointers on ways to handle her that might help her get over that trait? I am plannning on having her with me for a very long time. She has formed an attachment to me, preferring me to the rest of the family. Even though it has only been a short time, she already protects me as if i had raised her from a pup. She sleeps outside my bedroom porch door and lets me know of anything that might be out there. I would love any information / pointers / personal testaments, etc. .......please help! McTaggart - May 15, 2000 - 10:52:35 Sedalia, Mo [USA] My father has had a pyrenees for about 4 years now. i went home from basic training and i fell in love with him. He is the sweetest dog any one could ask for. Since my dad is the owner/operator of a 60 head flock of sheep. Barney is a true necessity. He has more than once killed or run off possible predators from the flock. Ranging from cyotes to other wild dogs. i don't know what we would do with out him. i wish every one had a dog as smart and such a gentle giant as he. |

- May 13, 2000 - 07:03:10 Corvallis, OR [USA] I have been learning and preparing to be a good pyr owner for almost four years now. Currently I am fostering a pyr-cross rescue dog, trying to help her find a good forever home. Soon I will be moving to the Netherlands, and soon after that I hope to get my first pyr. Puppy or older dog? Not sure just yet, probably an older dog if we find a good match. I can hardly wait! |

May 12, 2000 - 05:37:00 South Georgia [usa] We have a wonderful 18 month old female great pyr named Heidi (because she watches the goats). We had trouble with a neighbors Rotweilers killing our chickens, and I didn't want to risk them killing our goats--so we got Heidi. What a blessings she has been! She loves the goats and she loves us too! Sadly, we are facing a move to Jacksonville FL. I fear we won't be able to afford property there. Does anyone have an idea about how a Great Pyr who has been a livestock guardian outside, would adjust to a more traditional "pet" life--being inside, going for walks, etc? She is the first dog that I have ever really loved, so I'd hate to part with her, but I don't want to make her miserable either. Any comments would be appreciated. |

Blais - May 12, 2000 - 04:30:00 Paynton, sask [Canada] We purchased a great pyrenese pup a couple of months ago to help protect our deer against coyotes.(We had huge problems with coyotes last year.) The dog is wonderful. He is now five months old and his name is Polar. He is getting huge. He also eats ALOT! But he is the nicest dog in the world. He's so friendly and lovable. The best part is I haven't seen a coyote since we got him. I had never seen this breed of dog before, but we are definitely getting more. He's also great with my nephew who are 4 and 2 years old. He doesn't knock the boys over like our pb choc.lab. It's nice too find a dog that has so many great characteristics. |

May 11, 2000 - 9:32:32 Texarkana [US] My husband & I gave each other a male pyrenees puppy for Christmas. Each of us did not know the other was getting a puppy as a surprise. We had just lost our first pyrenees and were devistated. They are huge, lovable pups. Two totally different personalities but we love both. Can anyone suggest a good trainer for pyrenees. They live in the country but refuse to obey to come command and run off constantly and are a handful on the leash. One dog is easy to train but when you have 2, it is impossible to control them. |
